IDS Connect newsroom awards

IDS named top Indiana newspaper of the year among several honors by ICPA

Helen Rummel and Cate Charron at ICPA Award Ceremony.

The Indiana Daily Student and yearbook, Arbutus, were awarded in the creative, editorial and advertising departments by the Indiana Collegiate Press Association this month. These awards entail advertising publication of the year with 10 recognitions, Division I newspaper of the year with 31 recognitions, yearbook of the year with 17 recognitions and second place for website of the year with 8 recognitions.

IDS alumna, Cate Charron, was awarded the Brook Baker Indiana Collegiate Journalist of the Year for her extremely dedicated series on sexual assault. The Brook Baker Indiana Collegiate Journalist of the Year is awarded in remembrance of Brook Baker, late campus editor at Vincennes University in Vincennes, Indiana. This award recognizes great caliber in collegiate journalism in the state of Indiana while honoring Baker’s memory.

“The details and degree to which Cate explores the truth, and the lengths she goes to to see where things stand today are extraordinary.” a judge from ICPA announcement said. “That she also went to great effort to get Chris Parker to talk is commendable.”

Current Editor-in-chief Helen Rummel praised the IDS and its staff for its work and reputation.

"The IDS has time and time again shown its journalistic strength as an organization and this new round of awards continues to support this,” Rummel said. “I could not be more proud of this staff and I know they'll go on to become irreplaceable journalists and media professionals in their future careers."

Along with the overall wins for the IDS and Arbutus, there was a total of 70 recognitions for staff and individuals within the IDS and Arbutus listed below.
