The Musical Arts Center at Jacobs School of Music will be renovated this summer.

The MAC is home to the IU Jacobs School of Music Opera and Ballet Theater and presents dozens of concerts each year. IU President Michael McRobbie announced the renovations Feb. 28.

"I am delighted to announce the first refurbishment of the Musical Arts Center after nearly 50 years to provide a greatly enhanced and more comfortable experience for our opera-, ballet- and concert-going audiences in one of the truly iconic artistic gems of the Bloomington campus,” McRobbie said during a performance of IU Opera Theater's "La Traviata."

The MAC has not been renovated since it was built in 1971. According to a press release, 1,460 seats and the carpet will be replaced. Some seats will be removed to create accessible seating options. The updates will be completed in the fall, before the 2020-21 performance season begins.

A donation from the Well House Society of the IU Foundation will fund the renovations.
