Disney's 'Newsies' to run as Buskirk-Chumley's family holiday musical

The Buskirk-Chumley Theater will show Disney’s “Newsies” as its 13th annual family holiday musical from Dec. 12-29.

From Dec. 12-29 the Buskirk-Chumley Theater will show Disney’s “Newsies” as its 13th annual family holiday musical. Tickets start at $16.95 for children 12 and under, $18.95 for students, $29.95 for those under 35 and $34.95 for 35 and over.

The main cast features local and national talent, including Julian Diaz-Granados as Jack Kelly, Philip Christiansen as Joseph Pulitzer and Katie Scarlett Swaney as Katherine Plumber. Alongside the main cast will be 28 children and teens from within Monroe County as part of the youth ensemble.

“Newsies” tells a story of young, orphaned and homeless children who sell newspapers as a way to make ends meet. As newspaper bigwigs Joseph Pulitzer and Randolph Heart attempt to profit off the kids, Jack Kelly leads the newsies to protest.

The musical, based off the Newsboy Strike of 1899, won two Tony Awards in 2012, including Best Original Score and Best Choreography.
