IU men’s soccer alumnus Mason Toye lands spot on MLS Team of the Week

Freshman forward Mason Toye rushes towards the ball during the first half of play at the NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament Championship game against Stanford on Dec. 10 in Chester, Pennsylvania. IU lost 1-0.

IU men’s soccer alumnus Mason Toye, now a forward for Minnesota United FC, was named to the MLS team of the week, according to the league’s Twitter account.

Toye scored two goals within five minutes against Los Angeles FC, handing LA its first home loss of the season.

His first goal was from 13 yards out on a pass from teammate Jan Gregus. A few minutes later and 10 yards further than his first, Toye blasted the ball past the goalkeeper for his sixth goal of the season.

This victory put Minnesota in third place in the Western Conference with a record of 13-9-6.

Toye played just one year with the Hoosiers in which he earned the Big Ten Freshman of the Year award, as well as earning a spot on the first-team All-Big Ten and first-team for the United Soccer Coaches all-Midwest region.

In 2018, Toye was a seventh overall draft pick to Minnesota in the first round of the Major League SuperDraft. At the time, this made him the 46th Hoosier to be selected.
