COLUMN: Clean out your closet for the start of the spring semester

Fashion Filler

A new year — and a new semester — mean a fresh start, and the same goes for your wardrobe. It's an opportunity to clean your closet and have the style you've always wanted.

Venturing back to Bloomington means preparing for those freezing walks to and from the 8 a.m. class you willingly signed up for.  This cold weather brings with it new and practical outerwear styles to experiment with for the new year.

Bundling up for these winter months means adding layers and other accessories to keep you protected from the elements. Pairing a scarf with your winter jacket or over a sweater adds another dimension to the outfit while also protecting your neck from the cold.

The topic of discussion in the fashion world this winter is plaid. You can incorporate this into your wardrobe and potentially find a plaid scarf, which made an appearance in the Michael Kors collection for Fall/Winter 2018.

In addition to plaid, shades of brown that were part of '70s era fashion are making a comeback. These shades of brown range from dark brown to beige and look great when different ones are layered and styled.

When maintaining your style, cleaning out your wardrobe is just as important as adding items to your collection. Take time to go through your entire closet and categorize your garments into three piles.

The first pile should be clothes which match the current season and that you could see yourself actually wearing. The second pile should be clothes that match your style and taste but aren't appropriate for the season.

Yes, this means the one summer tank top you swear looks great should probably land somewhere near this pile. The third pile should be clothes that don't fit or that you couldn't see yourself wearing anymore. The clothes in this pile can be used for refashioning garments or can be donated in order to keep textiles out of our landfills.

This new year, make a fashion goal for yourself, no matter how big or small. You can change up your entire style completely, or maybe just add an accessory that you have always wanted to implement into your style.

Think of creative ways to achieve your desired look that makes it special to you. Fashion is an outward expression of our inner selves. Take this fresh start and new semester to recreate the image of yourself that you see and want to communicate to society the world around you.
