Blotter: Deli disturbance, lemonade incident, stolen lunches

Disturbance in the deli

Someone walked up to a Bloomington Police Department officer on the security detail at the Kroger on South College Avenue Monday evening and told them there was a “disturbance in the deli.”

The officer went to the deli and saw a man and a woman arguing. The 53-year-old woman reported the man backhanded her in the nose. Police said she did not have any visible injuries.

Officers said James Vanderburg, 48, denied hitting her. He was drunk at the time of the incident, according to the woman and police.

Vanderburg pulled away from police when they told him to stop, trying to leave the store. Officers took him to the ground and cuffed him.

Police later watched surveillance from the deli and said they saw Vanderburg and the woman struggle over an object. He then wiped a deli table with it and threw it at the woman’s face. It was unclear to police what the object was.

Vanderburg was not supposed to be at the Kroger since he was advised of trespass there in October 2017, according to BPD Lt. John Kovach.

He was arrested and charged with public intoxication, resisting law enforcement, domestic battery and criminal trespass.

Police called over lemonade incident

A woman called the police around 1 a.m. Monday after a man she was in an apartment with lemonade splashed on her.

The 19-year-old woman said she was at a friend’s apartment when a 21-year-old man showed up uninvited.

She told police the man was standing in front of the TV and drinking lemonade belonging to the 20-year-old owner of the apartment. She reported telling the man to stop drinking the lemonade and leave.

An argument ensued. He splashed her with the lemonade. She called the police.

When officers arrived, the owner of the apartment agreed it would likely be best if the man left. He did.

No charges are being pursued in relation to this incident.

IUPD receives three stolen lunch calls

Half of the reports the IU Police Department responded to Monday were related to food stolen out of refrigerators.

Three cases of lunch theft reported to IUPD Monday happened in campus buildings.

Two of the incidents were at Myers Hall and the third was at the Radio and TV building.

“Who knows what’s going on there,” IUPD Capt. Craig Munroe said.

Man found outside of furniture store resists police

A man found lying on the sidewalk outside Stahl Furniture of Bloomington was arrested after resisting police.

Employees of the South Walnut Street store called the police when they saw Charles Robinson, 53, on the ground outside.

Police said Robinson was clearly intoxicated or on drugs. They reported his speech was slurred and his eyes were red and watery.

Officers called an ambulance, but said Robinson did not cooperate with emergency responders. When they arrived at the hospital, Robinson reportedly refused to stay in bed and police had to hold him down.

He yelled and cursed at officers throughout the ordeal, according to police.

When he was cleared from the hospital, Robinson was escorted to a patrol car and taken to the Monroe County Correctional Center.

He was charged with public intoxication and resisting law enforcement.
