Thompson earns national honors

Indiana's Tanner Thompson crosses a defender in Sunday afternoon's 2-1 victory over Michigan State at Bill Armstrong Stadium.

After scoring four goals in two games in the past week, IU senior midfielder Tanner Thompson was named the College Soccer News player of the week.

Thompson came into the week having scored four goals on the season. After a hat trick against St. Louis on Tuesday and the game-winning goal Sunday versus Michigan State, the senior now has eight goals overall.

The senior out of Loomis, California, contributed to two Hoosier home wins in the past week.

IU came into the last day of the regular season tied for fourth in the Big Ten but was able to snatch the two-seed away from Michigan State with a 2-1 win. In addition to his eight goals, Thompson has two assists on the season and has elevated his play down the stretch of the regular season.

After the first week of the regular season, in which he tallied two goals and an assist, Thompson was named Top Drawer Soccer’s National Player of the Week and was named to College Soccer News’ National Team of the Week.

The Hoosiers will hope that Thompson continues his play as the Hoosiers will be host to Northwestern in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament on Sunday.
