Cody Miller will have a chance at winning an Olympic medal Sunday night in Rio.

The IU swimming and diving alum and first-time Olympian qualified second overall for the men’s 100-meter breaststroke final after finishing second in the second semifinal race with a time of 59.05.

It’s a personal best for Miller, who was just 0.11 seconds off the American record. He qualified fifth for the semifinals after posting a time of 59.17 in heat No. 4 earlier in the day.

Miller’s semifinal performance pushed him in front of fellow American Kevin Cordes, who qualified fifth for the 100-meter breaststroke final. Cordes bested Miller during the U.S. Olympic Trials in June by 0.08 seconds.

The pair will have their work cut out for them in the final. Adam Peaty of Great Britain posted a time of 57.62 in the semifinals, and set a new world record and Olympic record earlier in the day with a time that was 0.07 seconds faster than his semifinal performance.

Future Hoosier Marwan Elkamash also performed well today.

Elkamash swam a lifetime best and IU-record time of 3:47.43 in the heat No. 4 of the men’s 400-meter freestyle to finish 16th in the event.

Elkamash, who won the heat and swam for team Egypt, is transferring to IU this year after spending the past three years at South Carolina.
