Law enforcement officials are investigating a fatal car crash that killed a Bloomington woman Monday night in Elletsville, Indiana.
Rebecca Crozier, 33, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which took place in the 4100 block of North Hartstraight Road shortly before 7:50 p.m. Monday, according to a press release from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
The other person in the car, a Bloomington man named Herschel Lee Sparks, 38, was transported to IU Health Bloomington and later airlifted to IU Health Methodist with a broken pelvis. Both individuals were found on the ground outside of the car, but it is not yet clear if they were ejected as a result of the collision or exited afterward.
The vehicle, a 2004 Nissan Altima, collided with a tree off the side of North Hartstraight Road after traveling northbound at high speeds.
The Ellettsville Police Department is conducting an investigation to identify which of the two car occupants was the driver.
Indiana State Police was also called to reconstruct the accident scene that same night. Ellettsville Fire, IU Health Ambulance and the Monroe County Coroner’s Office also assisted in responding to the crash.
If Sparks was the driver and, depending on the status of the driver’s license, officials will determine if reckless homicide charges are necessary, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Ryan Davis said.
Just before the crash, Ellettsville Police Department Deputy Chief William Humphrey passed the car in the opposite direction on North Hartstraight Road, according to the press release. He turned around to try to stop the car, and when he reached the 4100 block, he saw the crash.
Humphrey called the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, which responded to the scene and is now investigating.
