A Brown County judge granted the man charged with murdering IU student Hannah Wilson a new trial date, set for June 1, 2016.
Daniel Messel’s final pretrial date is set for 11 a.m. May 16.
Wilson, a senior psychology major, went missing the evening of April 23. She was found dead in Brown County the next morning. Police arrested Messel on a preliminary charge of murder soon after.
Messel’s trial date was set for February, but Dorie Maryan, Messel’s attorney, requested more time to prepare her case for various reasons.
Since the charges were filed, the State of Indiana has submitted more than 500 pages of police investigation documents, according to Maryan’s motion for continuance of the trial. In the past month alone, the State has filed an additional 100 pages of new documents and introduced two additional witnesses.
According to the motion, the State also gave the defense 50 hours of surveillance video to review on Nov. 8.
The State has also identified over 60 witnesses to testify during the trial. The defense hopes to take depositions from 40 of the witnesses, including the State’s experts, according to the motion.
The prosecution has also sought to amend charges to include Messel as a habitual offender. Messel will appear in a closed hearing later this month to hear evidence on the matter.
