IUPD investigating racist comments made on social media

The IU Police Department is actively investigating a racist threat posted on social media Friday morning, IUPD Lt. Craig Munroe said.

Munroe said the comment was posted anonymously on Yik Yak stating, “If you’re not white don’t come to class today.”

Munroe said this is not the first comment IUPD has investigated through the social media platform and, while the comment is inappropriate, he does not think students should panic.

Protect IU posted on Facebook regarding the threat.

“IU utterly condemns such reprehensible behavior,” it read. “While it is most likely that actual violence is not intended, IUPD will be on high alert and urges students, faculty and staff to report any suspicious behavior immediately to IUPD at 812-855-4111. Information can be emailed to IUPD@indiana.edu.”

IU Bloomington Provost Lauren Robel addressed the issue in an email to students, faculty and staff.

"We completely reject this cowardly and anonymous action, intended to inject fear and divisiveness into what should be an open and honest set of conversations about the state of inclusiveness in our community," Robel said in the statement.
