Alleged armed sexual assault reported off campus

A man armed with a dark-colored handgun reportedly fled the scene of an alleged sexual assault off campus early Tuesday morning, according to an IU Notify alert.

The alert, sent at 3:30 a.m., identified the suspect as being a young, black man wearing dark clothing and a hat in his early 20s with facial hair. The assault reportedly occurred near the Brownstone Apartments near 14th and Dunn streets.

Sgt. James Batcho of the Bloomington Police Department said officers from both BPD and the IU Police Department initially responded to the report.

Just after 4:30 a.m., a second alert was issued that stated the suspect of the alleged sexual assault in the Brownstone area had not been located.

Lt. Craig Munroe of IUPD said BPD would be leading the investigation and the alert was sent due to the alleged assault’s proximity to campus.

An update posted to the IU Emergency Updates Facebook page stated that the investigation is ongoing but the immediate threat is believed to have passed.

The update encouraged people to be alert and to call police if something appears suspicious.
