J-Shun Harris to miss season among other roster updates

Freshman wideout J-Shun Harris reaches for a catch against Indiana State. Harris has quickly climbed up the IU depth chart in the opening weeks of the season.

As Big Ten Media Days begin Thursday, IU announced its preseason roster updates via press release.

The biggest news may be that sophomore receiver J-Shun Harris suffered an ACL injury and will redshirt the season after undergoing surgery. He had 18 receptions for 168 yards and two touchdowns last season. Coaches have spoken very highly of him.

Also, senior right tackle Ralston Evans was granted a medical hardship which will end his football career. He started 21 games and was a part of the 2014 offensive line that led the way for IU to rush for 3,163 yards, a school record.

“Injuries ended Ralston’s final two seasons and limited him this spring," IU Coach Kevin Wilson said. "He was a great player and is an even better man. Fortunately, Ralston will serve as a student coach this year. His leadership will continue to be invaluable to our team.”

Wilson also said that they did not make the decision initially because Evans wanted to work at getting on the field again. Even though he is not returning, he will still have a locker and be involved with the team. Evans doesn't necessarily want to get into coaching after he leaves, but maybe go into administration.

“He’s one of the neatest kids I’ve ever been around.”

Sophomore cornerback Donovan Clark will also be limited during camp to a back injury. Wilson said it has been a consistent problem and had to miss spring because of it. He said the team does not want to rush it and has to keep in mind instilling confidence in Clark with using his back.

“We may not get an immediate short term return, but we still know there’s a kid who played as a true freshman. There’s a good football player, and we just have to get him back right.”

Cornerback Kenny Mullen has graduated and will forego his final season of eligibility at IU. He suffered a season ending knee injury in IU's second game of the season against Bowling Green.

Freshmen Nick Carovillano and Coray Keel and junior Laray Smith have left the program. Wilson said they all leave in good academic standing.

Lastly, freshman Donovan Hale has qualified and will report to preseason camp.

“This is the best team, the best chemistry and the best preparation we have had,” Wilson said. “Our kids are fighting for and believing in themselves and each other. Mark Hill and our strength and conditioning staff along with our medical and academic staffs did a phenomenal job this summer. We are ready to get started.”
