Along with letters, postcards and magazines, Monroe County letter carriers transported 36,570 pounds of food on Saturday.
They picked up the cans and boxes of non perishable food during their normal morning mail routes and then brought the donations to the Hoosier Hills Food Bank as part of the Stamp Out Hunger food drive.
The event is the organization's largest fundraiser of the year and helps HHFB to keep shelves stocked throughout the summer months, according to a HHFB press release. This year they experienced a 25% increase in donations from the drive in 2014.
"Saturday was a great day," HHFB Executive Director, Julio Alonso, said in the release. "We're back up to the level we were seeing before last year and that's going to help us a lot. We really appreciate the support of all those in the community who donated and of our letter carrier partners for doing the heavy lifting to bring in more than 18 tons of food."
The nonprofit is currently looking for volunteers to help sort the donated food items so that it can begin distributing them to other agencies.
