IU splits doubleheader against Maryland

After a cancellation of Friday’s game against Maryland, the Hoosiesr would split a Saturday doubleheader against Maryland.

The Hoosiers would drop game one 6-3 after surrounding two runs in the first inning and another two runs in the third.

IU would get on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning on when Kassi Farmer hit an RBI single from up the middle that scored junior Kelsey Dotson.

Maryland would answer back in the top of the fifth inning with a solo homerun to extend their late game lead to 6-1.

The next inning, Dotson continued her brilliant season with a home run, her fourth straight game with a home run, to bring in senior Shannon Cawley to cut the deficit to 6-3.

However, the Hoosiers were unable to score anymore runs across the board as Maryland shut the IU offense down in the final two frames to seal the victory.

Senior Shannon Cawley and junior Michelle Huber each picked up a pair of hits in the contest and junior Kelsey Dotson scored two of IU's three runs in the game.

Dotson’s 10 home runs this season lead the team and ranks seventh in a single season in IU history.

In game two of the doubleheader Saturday, the Hoosiers were able to hold off the Terrapins late and pick up an 11-8 win behind Cawley’s six RBI’s.

Game two started the same as game one, with Maryland jumping out to an early 4-0 lead.

The Hoosiers would respond with a three run second inning after sophomore Erin Lehman drew a bases loaded walk to bring in junior Michelle Huber and Cawley picked up her first two RBI’s on a single up the middle.

Erin Pronobis would hit three home runs in the game for Maryland, including one in the top of the third to extend the Terrapin lead to 5-3.

IU would gain its first lead of the series however when it scored a season high six runs in the bottom of the fourth, highlighted by Cawley, who stepped in and hit her second grand slam of the season to put the Hoosiers on top 8-5.

The Terrapins would hit two home runs in the fifth before the Hoosiers regained their four run lead with a two run RBI single from Lehman, which scored freshmen Rebecca Blitz and Rachel O’Malley.

Probonis would hit her third home run of the game, cutting the IU lead to three. However, senior Miranda Tamayo would shut the Maryland offense down and pick up her first save of the year.

Cawley’s six RBI’s are tied for second most in a single game in IU history and are the most this season since Dotson had seven RBIs against Lehigh on Feb. 27.

The Hoosiers and the Terrapins will face off tomorrow to decide the series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
