IU looks to extend Hawkeye domination

IUBASEvsUL

IU baseball looks to continue its winning ways this weekend when it travels to Iowa to play a three-game set against the Hawkeyes.

Taking care of business against Iowa has been something IU has done well since the 2009 season with a record of 17-2 against Iowa.

The Hoosiers (16-5, 1-1) will start junior Caleb Baragar on Friday, sophomore Jake Kelzer on Saturday, and possibly junior Scott Effross on Sunday. However, IU Coach Chris Lemonis said he has yet to determine if he will pitch. Effross missed two starts due to soreness earlier this season and is still in the recovery process. He said he feels great and will be able to pitch this weekend.

The pitching has been the story for IU so far this season with multiple options in both the rotation and the bullpen.

Junior Christian Morris will not pitch this weekend after starting a game in each weekend series this year. He is 2-0 with a 5.04 ERA in six starts this season.

Junior Kyle Hart will join the competition when he returns from injury in the next week or two.

Iowa (14-6, 0-0) is coming off of a loss to Bradley. They will likely throw a trio of juniors against IU: Calvin Matthews, Tyler Peyton and Blake Hickman. Matthews has appeared in six games with a 0.35 ERA.

The Hawkeyes are led by junior outfielder Joel Booker at the plate.

The Hoosiers counter with two surprises: sophomore outfielders and first basemen Craig Dedelow and Austin Cangelosi, who competed for the first base job earlier in the season. Dedelow is hitting .341 with two home runs and 15 RBIs while Cangelosi is batting .333 with three home runs and 10 RBIs.

Game one is set for 4 p.m. Friday, game two for 3 p.m. Saturday, and the finale Sunday is scheduled for ?2 p.m.
