Today’s school girl may work 25 years outside the home.
“But I’m a Woman – Isn’t That Enough?”
Not according to Dean Eunice Roberts who discussed this topic with about 40 girls from Harper Hall, Foster Quadrangle Tuesday night.
Dean Roberts, who is in charge of women’s educational programs, said that women’s role in the economy has changed since pioneer days. At that time few women worked outside the home. But recent Department of Labor figures predict that women now of school age will work an average of 25 years at paid jobs outside the home.
Dean Roberts believe that college women can best prepare for this 25 years of work by taking a variety of liberal art courses. Besides helping her to adapt to different jobs, it will aid her in raising her children.
Dean Roberts does not wish to eliminate specialization entirely.
“Never depart form something in which you have a keen intellectual interest,” she said.
During a question-and-answer session after her speech, Dean Roberts said that “any woman who has a mind that can be educated and the opportunity to g to school, has a moral responsibility to develop her mind.”
The speech was the second in Foster Quadrangle’s Career Clinic series. Mrs. Joyce McNabb, special counselor, said that discussions on the Peace Corps and careers in medicine are also being planned.
