Transcription: Buck, Stuteville and Garrett Lead Scoring
By Charlie Lyons
Indiana broke its four-game losing streak last night by a 56-41 count at the expense of a weak and ragged Northwestern team which never made a serious threat.
The Hoosier offense was driven by a dynamo named Bill Garrett who turned in a magnificent ball handling, passing, and shooting exhibition while playing virtually all of the game from the pivot position. He caged eleven points in taking only ten shots from the field to gain runnerup scoring honors.
Phil Buck, who did not get into the game until seven minutes remained in the first half, garnered a dozen markers on his looping set shot to lead the point production.
Gain, 16-9, Lead.
The game was a race-horse exhibition, with the Hoosiers building up a 16-9 lead at the half-way mark of the Initial period. Garrett hit the Hoosiers first bucket from under the hoop after faking his man out of the way. Gene Ring took a rebound and went the full length of the floor to tally. After Jerry Stutevllle netted a layup, Ring did it again, breezing past a Wildcat who forgot to turn around. A set shot by Tosheff and another two-pointer by Stuteville put the Hoosiers out of reach.
Bill Sticklen did his best to keep the Wildcats in the ball game with his three buckets but the Hoosiers poured it on to forge into a 34-20 all-time lead. The Wildcats only managed five buckets in this period while the winners were notching three times as many.
Trampoline Exhibition.
After a crowd-pleasing exhibition on a trampoline by the I.U. gymnasts who turned resumed the chase for the second half. The Wildcats continued to be almost as much up in the air as the gymnasts as the accurate Hoosiers gradually stretched their lead to twenty-three points with 4½ minutes left.
Lou Watson, who did not start last night, hit three baskets in that stretch. Buck did likewise, and Garrett contributed another. George Maddock, who saw considerable service in place of Ray Ragells, who was effectively bottled up, counted on a layup and Don Blasis potted a one-hander from the side. Then Northwestern went for almost ten minutes before they could get another bucket as the Hoosiers piled up their twenty-three point lead.
Garrett at Center.
Indiana, with Garrett in the center slot, presented a nicely balanced attack with scoring punch in every position in addition to plenty of speed and deception. The scoring burden was evenly divided with six Hoosiers getting at least three buckets. Phil Buck, with clever dribbling, faking and all-around coolness, hit his high total by connecting on 5 of 11 pitches. Sticklen and Jake Fendley, with 10 and 8 respectively, supplied what scoring punch the Wildcats showed.
The Hoosiers had one of their best nights from the field, dunking 23 of 72 for a .320 average. The ‘Cats could do no better than 11 of 69 for a cool .160 mark. From the charity stripe the hosts connected on 10 of 18 while the losers did somewhat better in notching 19 of 27.
