IPE serves as National Council for Science and the Environment satellite location

As the National Council for Science and the Environment hosts its 15th national conference in Washington, D.C., IU’s Integrated Program in the Environment will serve as a satellite location.

IU’s event will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 27 at Ostrom Workshop, 513 N. Park Ave., according to an IU press release.

During the day, IPE will broadcast three plenaries from the national conference, which are titled, “The Big Challenges,” “Decarbonizing the Energy Supply” and “Smart Energy: Transforming Our Relationship to Energy.”

Those wanting to attend are allowed to drop in and leave whenever they want, but IPE said it wants RSVPs for anyone planning on attending its third session and roundtable discussion with IU faculty and staff from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“I am pleased that IPE is able to host an opportunity for the campus community to listen in at the conference and to participate in a dialogue about this important challenge, quite likely the defining challenge of our time,” Director of IPE Jeffrey White said in a press release.

The event will have a few refreshments, but attendees are encouraged to bring lunch, according to the press release.

The national conference, which will be broadcasted, will have over 1,000 leaders in climate science and governance including EPA administrator Gina McCarthy, former governors Bill Richardson and Jennifer Granhold and scientist Amory Lovins, according to the press release.

IPE’s Associate Director Sarah Mincey will attend the national conference with four of her students.

One student, Kathleen de Onis, said in the press release she plans to continue her on-campus activism with the knowledge she gains at the Energy and Climate Change Conference.

So far, de Onis has authored the Graduate and Professional Student Organization’s divestment and neutrality resolution and received the Goddard Prize for her work on bringing solar hot water to campus residence halls, according to the press release.

All conference sessions are available to IU faculty through a special login. Contact Sarah Mincey for access at skmincey@indiana.edu. A complete schedule can be found on the conference’s website energyandclimatechange.org.
