IU greets Yuletide

Yuletide

Transcription: I.U. Greets Yuletide

Snow is the only thing Jacking to perfect I.U.'s Christ-mas spirit as boughs of holly, sparkling Christmas trees, and glittering wreaths have appeared all over cam-pus. Proclaiming the holiday season to the entire campus is a spectacular tree of lights on the North side of the Union Building tower. Between 150 and 175 green lights are used in the display, which covers the entire side of the building.

First Time for Tree.

The tree, making its first appearance this year, is trimmed with red lights on the tips of the branches and a white star on top. Red spotlights are illuminating the bottom of the tree, and green lights, the top. On the Union terrace is a modP.1 from which this tree of lights was copied, a 30-foot evergreen glowing with about 80 lights. The tree came from the yard of the Phi Kappa Psi, social fraternity house, and was cut down to make room for its new parking lot. The Auditorium is also adding to the Yuletide atmosphere. 'The decorations were designed by Richard L. Scammon, assistant professor of speech and theatre, to give the effect of looking through the spaces on the front of the building. They were also used last year. In the middle is a large chandelier with amber colored lights for candles. Ropes of greenery with red lights representing berries are draped from the chandelier to sconces on either side. On the sconces are lighted candles and big sprays of greenery with red bows. The background is flooded with blue lights.

Christmas Glow.

Christmas trees are also glowing all over campus. In the first floor foyer of the Auditorium is a snow-covered tree trimmed with angel hair, blue and silver ornaments, and blue lights. The chandelier above it also contains blue lights. There is a similarly trimmed blue and silver tree in the Commons. The parlors of the Student Building, the general lounge of the Union, and the porch of the Campus Club are among the many places with Christmas trees. In the Union lobby the chandelier has all blue lights and a spotlight on three silver bells. On the north wall large glittering letters proclaim "Noel" to everyone who enters.

Wreath of Welcome.

There is a large wreath above the fireplace in the general lounge. A holly wreath with lights in it, a new feature this year, is above the main entrance to the Union, which is trimmed with evergreen branches and colored lights. The Commons has taken on a ' blue and white look for the Christmas season. Big white letters with blue glitter across the front of the room wish everyone a “Happy Holiday.” Snowflakes are dancing from the lights which have been changed to blue, and stars are shining on all the windows.

Formal Opened Season.

The campus burst forth in all its Christmas glory Friday night In connection with Opening of Formal Season, when all the lights were turned on for the first time and all the decorations were finished. Decorations Inside the Union Building were planned by the Union Cultural Division and the Student-Faculty Relations and House Division. Shad Newkirk, senior, was in charge of the Commons decorations, and Darol Stroman, sophomore, planned the decorations upstairs and inside the building. Other decorations campus were put up by Buildings and Grounds.
