IU has suspended the Zeta Epsilon Chapter Charter for Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., effective immediately, according to a press release.
Omega Psi Phi is under suspension for allegedly participating in hazing, a violation of the Student Code of Conduct, and is prohibited from hosting, attending, participating and sponsoring any organizational activities until the final disposition of the case.
The fraternity is small, with only three members and three pledges, Vice President of University Communications Mark Land said in an email.
The fraternity’s national headquarters has been contacted as well, Land said.
"The next step for the fraternity will be to attend a meeting with the Student Organization Ethics Board who will determine if the group is responsible for the alleged violations of the Student Code of Conduct," said Assistant Dean of Students Steve Veldkamp. "If found responsible, the Board comprised of 11-15 IU students will create a proposal for the Dean of Students to approve."
The board will hand down sanctions that can range from educational initiatives, probation and, in extreme circumstances, the dissolution of the group.
Once the meeting is scheduled, the process typically takes a week, Veldkamp said.
