The IU Student Media Board appointed two new editors-in-chief for the Indiana Daily Student and an editor for the 2014 Arbutus yearbook Friday.
Max McCombs, a senior journalism major set to graduate in August, was appointed the editor-in-chief of the summer 2013 IDS. McCombs has worked for the IDS for nine semesters and has been managing editor and sports editor. He is currently a men’s basketball reporter.
“Since summer publication is only two days a week, I’m hoping to further a Web-first mentality in the newsroom and streamline that process a bit based on my experience covering sports,” McCombs said in an email. “Live-tweeting will be stepped up considerably as well.”
He noted he’d also like to revise the editing process for the IDS’ many special publications and encourage more risk taking from page designers.
Mark Keierleber, a senior journalism major, will be editor-in-chief of the fall 2013 IDS.
Keierleber has worked for the IDS for four semesters, including as region editor, but also served as editor-in-chief of Northwest Trail, the student paper of Northwest College in Powell, Wyo.
“Next fall, our audience should expect to see an increase in multimedia content at idsnews.com,” Keierleber said in an email. “Improving our investigative reporting team will also be a priority. Students deserve to know the answers to tough questions, and we’re in the position to provide them.”
Hayleigh Elmore, a sophomore telecommunications major, was appointed 2014 Arbutus yearbook editor. Elmore has worked as an Arbutus design and calendar editor for two semesters.
