FROM IDS REPORTS

The City of Bloomington announced Thursday it would be celebrating Public Health Week by offering free health screenings and health education information beginning April 1.

The program is a collaboration of the City of Bloomington Department of Community and Family Resources, IU Health Bloomington and the Monroe County Health Department. The event will run from 9 a.m. to noon April 6.

Services offered will include blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), A1C (diabetes, non-fasting) and HIV/STI tests as well as depression and spinal screenings.

Exhibitors include the Monroe/Greene County WIC, the Active Living Coalition, G.O.A.L. Weight Management, Individual Solutions, the Monroe County Health Department,
Volunteers in Medicine and the Monroe County Suicide Prevention Coalition.

The theme for this year’s National Public Health Week is “Public Health is ROI: Save Lives, Save Money.” The 2013 theme aims to highlight prevention and the importance of well-supported public health systems in preventing disease and curbing healthcare spending. The weeklong event was originally created by President Bill Clinton in 1995. It is organized by the American Public Health Association.
