Hues of Holi

caHoli Carousel

Dozens of students threw powdered paint at each other to celebrate the Indian festival Holi on Wednesday afternoon in front of the Collins LLC.

Hosted by the Asian Culture Center, Holi is one of the most festive holidays in India, commemorating the triumph of good instead of evil and the coming of spring. The festival is also known as the festival of colors.

Holi is celebrated with dancing, cultural foods and a custom of throwing vibrant powder, or “gulal”, which means rose. One of the most striking features of the powder is its spring-like smell.

The powder consists of ground up rose petals, which participants throw onto others during the festival.

Along with the color fight at Collins on Wednesday, traditional Indian games and a Henna Tattoo booth was set-up on the veranda.

The free event gave students a chance to experience Indian culture and tradition firsthand, while also immersing them in a colorful way to celebrate the arrival the spring.
