Chlorine being temporarily used in city water treatment

Bloomington Utilities Deparment will temporarily be implementing the use of chlorine disinfectant into its drinking water through the end of March.

Feb. 28 was the first day on the new system. The procedure is known as “free chlorination,” and is commonly utilized as a maintenance practice for water systems that use combined chlorine disinfections or chloramines, according to a press release.

Any changes in water color or appearance should be reported to the Bloomington Utilities Department, Water Quality Coordinator Rachel Atz said in the release. Atz said she recommends running faucet until the water attains its original color.
