School spirit, social media and boobs

What do you define as school spirit? Going to every home basketball game? Wearing IU apparel? Even taking the time to follow an IU team that’s not men’s basketball?

What about boobs?

IU Boobs, known on Twitter as @IUBoobs1, is an account that solicits pictures of women’s breasts in IU colors, because, obviously, that’s true school spirit.

Technically, the account’s Twitter description says “Support IU teams by tweeting pics of girls in IU apparel.”

When you page through the account’s Twitpic gallery, which is definitely not safe for work, you’ll notice that many of the women pictured aren’t wearing any apparel at all.
Those who are sport their sexiest, most padded push-up bras, whatever colors they may be.

The only spirited element in most of the pictures is an IU symbol scrawled on the skin in black or red marker.

The account seems to be modeled after similar @(insert school)boobs accounts popping up all over Twitter.

It’s a fad.

We don’t even need to get into the sexism, objectification and generally icky voyeurism of all of this. You can draw those conclusions yourselves.

The question we must raise is this: in many of the pictures, women are holding their breasts in what’s sometimes called a “hand bra.” However, the pictures are still obviously cell phone shots, not timed cameras.

If both of the subject’s hands are on the subject’s breasts, who on earth is holding the phone and taking the pictures?

We doubt many boyfriends would be willing.

And you’d have to be especially close to your roommates, or especially drunk, to ask one of the ladies you live with to casually snap a shot of your bare breasts.

It’s a mystery.

We won’t slut shame these women displaying their breasts, although we will warn that sending pictures of your breasts to a perfect stranger to be posted online is probably not the best idea.

But we will throw a little shade at whoever is running this Twitter account.
Women already have enough to deal with when it comes to their relationships with their sexuality.

They don’t need the pressure to send in photos of their boobs to “support IU teams.”
Many of said teams would probably be better served by fans actually showing up and cheering.

After all, it’s not like they’re showing an @IUBoobs1 slideshow on the Jumbotron at important moments in the game. And if they did, we doubt it would end well for either team.

We think the person behind this account is a creepy genius not motivated by actual IU spirit, but instead by an endless stream of pictures of women’s breasts “for spirit.”

Right.

Remember, ladies, we don’t need to see your boobies to know you’re spirited.
