Bjork: Bring the 90s back!

Throughout her long career, Björk has established herself as the leading lady of artistic collaboration, and 2012’s “Bastards,” an album of remixes featuring artists Omar Souleyman to Death Grips to Matthew Herbert, is no exception.

That being said, I cannot help but feel that loyal 90s era Björk fans will feel slightly disheartened by the direction her sound has taken in recent years.

This new set of remixes is a great boost to the reputation of artists lucky enough to collaborate with her, but some essential element goes missing between “Biophilia,” her original album and “Bastards,” the remixes. For one, Omar Souleyman’s “Crystalline” remix removes the sonic breakdown that was at the heart of her original version.

For these artists, a chance to remix Björk’s Biophilia album must have been a dream come true. But for the listener, her wild, unrestrained energy is overshadowed by the remixes’ repetitive beats and stagnating tempos.

Björk is the queen of originality, the goddess of rhythm and in my eyes no collaborative remix can do better than what Björk does on her own.
