Having just finished pregame traffic control for the Notre Dame football game Oct. 13, 2012, three Indiana state troopers entered the Hammes Bookstore on the Notre Dame campus when a bystander alerted them a man was unresponsive, laying on the floor and not breathing.

Troopers Brian McCall, Gary Runde and Ryan Purkiser approached the man who, at the time, did not have a pulse, according to a press release.

The troopers notified the Notre Dame Emergency Command Center and performed CPR until the South Bend Fire Department arrived as well.

The emergency personnel arrived on the scene to relieve the troopers and tend to the victim, according to the press release.

The male victim, 47, was transported to Memorial Hospital in South Bend.

The three troopers were recognized for their efforts at an Indiana Pacers basketball game Jan. 2.
