Best of Jenna Marbles

Remember that article Christopher Hitchens wrote about women not being funny? Jenna Mourey, better known as Jenna Marbles on YouTube, has been proving him wrong for more than two years.

Jenna is a brilliant mix of girly silliness and restrained trolling, with just a little bit of “Dear Abby” thrown in. 2012 was a solid year for the YouTube star. Here are her five finest clips from this year.

5. “What Boys Do in the Bathroom in the Morning”
One of Jenna’s greatest creations is her boy character for her “What Boys/Girls do” recurring segment. It brilliantly represents our interactions with things we don’t understand, as well as our shames. What the hell do girls use pencils for in the bathroom?
Best moment:  The first 60 seconds of this video are comedy gold, but the coup de grace comes at the end with “Gonna be early so you can gargle my balls.  Sorry Grandma that wasn’t for you... Well I mean unless you wanna...”

4. “Make or Break Relationship Moments”
Sometimes a joke works best when it starts grounded in reality, such as when a friend confesses something endearing or terrifying. It does wander off into silliness of course, but it makes it that much funnier. We also learn that apparently nobody can have three dicks.
Best moment:  “I’m a model. MAKE! Model AIRPLANE WEEEEE ZOOM HERE I COME HAHAHA! BREAK!”

3. “What I Want When I’m Cold”
I could actually respect the idea of the Snuggie if it just became self-aware and went all out in its ridiculousness like this variation created by Jenna. Proof of her comedic genius lies in one of the “bonus features” of the Super Magic Blanket; pay $25 extra and it comes with a $20 bill in the pocket.  That comes straight out of Abbott & Costello!
Best moment: “The Super Magic Blanket turns human waste into blue cheese!”

2. “Landshark”
Right from the opening title, where the familiar squeaking is replaced with a strange drumbeat, we know something’s not quite right here. For about two minutes, we’re staring in bewilderment thinking Jenna has lost her damn mind.
But afterwards, “I don’t know what to say about that...” Cue massive belly laugh. She also says, “Well it was in my brain and now it’s on the internet.” Folks, if that doesn’t describe the creative process for any art form, I don’t know what does.
Best moment: If you pause around the 1:30 mark, you see Jenna pumping air into a balloon-shark making the most priceless face you’ve ever seen in your life.

1. “How To Get Boys To Like You”
Similar in tone to her now-classic “How To Trick People Into Thinking You’re Good Looking,” Jenna brings out a heaping helping of cynicism to instruct us young people how not to interact with the opposite sex.
Jenna has never had acting classes, but the way she performs a smarmy stalker blows me away. Also be sure to tune in to the post-video section for a brilliant Kermit imitation of a certain Simpsons character.
Best moment: “Just heard our song on the radio... ASS. ASS. ASS. ASS. ASS. ASS. ASS. ASS.”

Honorary mentions: “Interrupting Adele,” “Text Message Decoder,” “Things Girls Lie About,” “Things Guys Lie About,” and a video on boyfriend MaxNoSleeves channel titled “Max Can You Do This” (do not watch this unless you want nightmares).
