Hoosiers tied for 1st after round 1 in Las Vegas

FROM IDS REPORTS

After day one of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown, the IU women’s golf team sits in a tie for first place.

Sophomore Elizabeth Tong leads the tournament individually with a two-under 70. This is the team’s final tournament before the winter offseason.

The Big Ten is performing well so far in the tournament, with four of the top five spots occupied by members of the conference.

Wisconsin is tied with IU for first while Minnesota and Penn State are in third and tied for fourth, respectively.

The Hoosiers recorded three players in the top 13, including Tong, senior Pamela Burneski and graduate student Kristen Schelling.

Burneski and Schelling are tied for third and 13th, respectively.

Tong recorded her first of four birdies on the second hole of her round and was below par for the rest of the day to finish with the individual lead.

It is her first tournament lead since she won the IU Fall Kickoff earlier this year.

Burneski shot her best finish of the season after putting up a 72 on Sunday, while Schelling finished with a score of 74.

IU’s team was rounded out by scores from senior Rosie Davies, who shot a 76, and freshman Marissa DeCola’s 78.

This is the Hoosiers’ first three-day tournament of the season.

The second round of competition will be played Monday, and the tournament will conclude with the final round on Tuesday.
