Hoosier Hysteria gets 6 canned tons

Hoosier fans who made it to Assembly Hall for Hoosier Hysteria on Saturday night donated more than six tons of food to Hoosier Hills Food Bank.

The supply came at a time of need, according to a press release issued Monday, since the food bank’s stock of canned goods was “practically nonexistent” last week.

“We are always really low at this time of year going into the holidays, and this event has given us a much needed boost for the past 20 years,” Hoosier Hills Food Bank Executive Director Julio Alonso said in the release. “We’re extremely grateful to the Indiana University Athletic Department and to the generous Hoosier fans who donated.”

Although a donation was not required for entry into the event, fans were encouraged to bring a canned food item for the food bank.

About 30 volunteers from various campus organizations helped the food bank collect items.

“The excitement was electric at Assembly Hall, and accepting can after can of food from fans as they went in, knowing that they didn’t even have to donate, was heartwarming,” Alonso said.
