IUPUI designated a ‘StormReady University’

IU-Purdue University Indianapolis earned the title of “StormReady University,” the first IU campus to do so, on Aug. 27.

“Obtaining the StormReady Program certification from the National Weather Service validates the important work that is being done by our campus,” said Carlos Garcia, IUPUI director of Emergency Management and Continuity. “It clearly shows our commitment to the safety and protection of our students, faculty and staff and highlights the preparedness efforts of not only IU Emergency Management and Continuity, but all of our campus partners.”

The campus has set up communication channels to the NWS office in Indianapolis and has implemented multiple alert systems.

For a campus to receive the title, it must meet certain criteria, which include organizing seminars to inform the public about weather safety and staying vigilant about area weather conditions.

“StormReady arms communities with improved communication and safety skills needed to save lives and property,” said Dan McCarthy, a meteorologist at the NWS Indianapolis forecast office. “IUPUI officials have done an outstanding job in developing the necessary infrastructure to meet the criteria set forth by the StormReady program.”
