IUPD responds to reports of vandalism, missing person and harassing messages

False alarm of missing student

IU Police were alerted to a possible missing student at 12:40 a.m. Sunday at Teter Quad. A female student lost her phone.

The person who found it texted the student’s mother and said the girl was in trouble. The mother reported the student missing to the IU Police Department.

The text turned out to be a false alarm.

“Whoever thought that was a joke, that’s not funny,” IUPD Chief Keith Cash said. “They can actually be charged for false informing.”

Cash said police had no way to know the girl wasn’t missing and spent hours using multiple resources to search for the student.

Student arrested for alleged car damage

Believing someone was honking at him, a student kicked a car bumper at McNutt Quad at about 2:10 a.m. Sunday morning.

The student caused about $200 in damages, Cash said, and was arrested for vandalism.

Harassing text messages reported

A female student living in Union Street Residence Center reported receiving harassing text messages from an acquaintance. The student wanted to document the incident.
IUPD is not investigating at this time.
