IU to celebrate Constitution Day with public events

IU will celebrate Constitution Day on Sept. 17 to commemorate the signing of the Constitution 225 years ago.

Events during the day include a live-stream of an event panel from the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. This panel of Civil War historians of the Emancipation Proclamation will discuss its relevance to the Constitution. The event is from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the Indiana Memorial Union’s Whittenberger Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

Other events include a panel conversation about voter identification laws from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Maurer School Moot Court Room. The School of Education will discuss noncitizens and education from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Wright Education Building 3275. The School of Public and Environmental Affairs is organizing a forum exploring the 2012 election from 4 to 5 p.m. in Kelley School CG 3059.

Copies of the Constitution will be handed out from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Herman B Wells Library.

“Constitution Day commemorates a signal event in our nation’s history, the signing of a document that remains powerful and relevant 225 years after it was written,” said Lauren Robel, provost and executive vice president. “It’s especially gratifying that IU-Bloomington faculty and students have organized such a variety of activities to observe the day.”
