IU in 7th place after day 1 of Windon Memorial

FROM IDS REPORTS

Darkness caused play to be suspended Sunday evening at the Windon Memorial at Skokie Country Club in Glencoe, Ill., where IU tried to maintain its successful start to the season.

The Hoosiers, along with five other schools, were able to get both rounds in Sunday before play was stopped.

At the end of the opening round, IU’s five-man team carded a 298, which put them in a fourth-place tie with Tennessee. Northwestern, Coastal Carolina and Michigan State recorded lower scores.

Senior Brant Peaper and sophomore Hugo Menendez, both with two-over-par scores, led the Hoosiers during the first round.

Peaper recorded a birdie on holes five and seven with bogeys on one, two, eight and nine. His offsetting birdie and bogey on 11 and 16, respectively, put him at 73 on the par 71 course.

Menendez had a more consistent round, scoring 14 pars with three bogeys and a lone birdie.

Freshman Sean Stone, a late addition to the Hoosiers’ lineup, recorded eight bogeys, including five straight to close the round. Stone finished with an eight-over-par first round score Sunday morning.

Senior Corey Ziedonis and junior David Mills scored 75 and 77, respectively.

As a team, the Hoosiers slipped in the standings during round two Sunday afternoon despite matching their opening-round score of 298, falling to seventh with a two-round total of 596 when play was called for the day.

Menendez duplicated his opening-round score of 73 to get to four-over-par heading into round three of play.

The remaining four Hoosiers offset each other with Ziedonis and Stone improving their scores and Mills’ and Peaper’s scores increasing.

Stone posted the greatest improvement for IU as he shed five strokes from his first round score to get to 74.

On the other side of the spectrum, Peaper had the largest increase in his score as five bogeys, a double bogey and a triple bogey led to a 78.

The nine teams that didn’t finish the second round Sunday will do so Monday morning.

The final round tee times will be determined at the conclusion of the second round.
