The porn industry’s cockblock

Theoretically, people could spend years by themselves in front of their laptop and still not have watched all the pornography that has been produced.

Such ambition has not yet been reported.

Porn’s overwhelming and eternal presence on the Internet should satiate the population while the industry hails a moratorium.

After killing moods everywhere, syphilis has finally halted porn production after introducing itself into the system of one unlucky actor.

No word yet on whether he is being quarantined.

A syphilis outbreak is expected of the porn industry considering the nature of the job. Ceasing production demonstrates the industry’s interest in protecting the health of its actors.

Mandating condom usage would demonstrate a commitment to it.

The porn industry should not forfeit safety to explore fantasy.

Rubberless performances may be more popular among viewers, but those viewers will never run out of new material.

Unfortunately, the belief that condom scenes do not sell is endangering both actors and viewers.

This year Los Angeles voted to require condoms for films produced within the city.
Industry members, directors and performers are generally opposed.

Performers dislike the painful friction condoms cause during their longer-than-real-life, faster-than-real-life sex sessions.

Some also feel that mandating condoms when they have for so long chosen not to is an infringement on their rights.

It can also be argued that introducing sexually transmitted diseases into the community and endangering it is an infringement on rights as well.

One concern is how the industry will proceed if condom regulation becomes widespread and production companies everywhere reject it.

If the industry moves underground, it will be impossible to standardize. As of now, the only standard in place that protects its performers is mandatory testing.

However, this isn’t always effective as evident by the current syphilis parade. The porn industry can’t monitor all of its performers sexual behavior off the clock.

Does this mean that there is no way to ensure performers’ health and safety?

If condom usage helps to ensure these things, then the industry needs to consider either producing closer-to-real-life sex sessions or seeking a less painful condom model.

They also need to consider their role in influencing the sexual practices of their customers.

According to the Kinsey Institute, 56 percent of American men and 30 percent of American women have had five or more sex partners in their lifetime.

Hopefully people are not rotating partners with the same frequency as porn stars, for the sake of their health. Regardless of the variance in partners, people need to understand the consequences of sex without protection.

If the porn industry were legally required to enforce condom usage and receive legal ramifications otherwise, this would perhaps emphasize to the public how important protection is.

Until then, porn stars retain their right to dispense with rubbers and endanger one another and their sexual partners outside of work.
