Red-shirt junior distance runner Zach Mayhew placed 14th in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 29:43.79 Wednesday at the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.
With the finish, Mayhew earned Second Team All-American honors, the first All-American honors of his career, and shaved off nearly a minute from his preliminary qualifying time.
Mayhew started the race in lane eight with the number 788 pinned to his crimson jersey. His first appearance at the NCAA Championships was grueling, as he fought to stay with the pack. Mayhew was only 22 seconds off of a top-ten finish.
Mayhew qualified for the NCAA Championships by placing 10th on day one of the NCAA East Preliminary Round with a time of 30:26:10. 15 other Hoosiers (13 men and two women) qualified to join Mayhew in competition this weekend.
The Championships continue through June 9. Check idsnews.com for recaps after each day of events and Monday’s paper for a full recap of the Championships.
