The Big Ten announced Thursday that 105 Hoosier student-athletes were named to the conference’s Spring and At-Large Sports All-Academic team. The number puts IU fourth — behind Ohio State, Minnesota and Penn State — among the conference’s 12 member schools.
“To have 105 Academic All-Big Ten honorees speaks volumes about the quality of our student-athletes, coaches and academic support staff,” IU Vice President and Director of Athletics Fred Glass said in a press release.
Student-athletes are eligible for the distinction if they are letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution and maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better.
Junior softball player Kelsey Brannon was the lone Hoosier among 18 Big Ten student-athletes to maintain a 4.0 GPA.
In total, the Big Ten recognized 1,154 student-athletes for the award.
Among Hoosier sports, IU rowing led the way with 28 honorees, followed by women’s track and field (20), men’s track and field (18), men’s golf (8) , softball (8), baseball (7), men’s tennis (4), men’s water polo (4) and women’s golf (3).
Including the 90 fall recipients and 48 winter recipients, 243 Hoosiers have earned Academic All-Big Ten distinction during the 2011-12 academic year,
