Big woops

Don't call it a comeback.

“Big Hoops” is painful, and hopefully not indicative of what is to come from Furtado. The track is the first single from “The Spirit Indestructible,” the singer’s first album since 2009, recently delayed to Sept. 11.

The song is in the vein of megahit “Promiscuous” but fails to capture the same sensual and lively sound. Instead, Furtado’s voice is irritating. “Big Hoops” highlights her vocal propensity to sound both screechy and whiny at the same time. At best, the song is grating, and it takes effort to listen to the song in its entirety.

The forthcoming album should reflect Furtado’s signature eclecticism — its producers include Rodney “Darkchild” Jenkins, Metallica producer Bob Rock and Jamaican reggae producer Da Genius. Hopefully, the album will also feature tracks similar to the brand of music that first made Furtado popular, like “I’m Like a Bird” and “Turn off the Light.”

Furtado released a statement saying, “This album is all about positivity, youth, good energy and the relentlessness of the spirit.” Her first single is certainly a relentless assault on the ears.
