IUSA, Teens Turning Green partner for fashion show

A partnership between the IU Student Association and Teens Turning Green organization brought its very first REstyled fashion show to IU.

The models strutted down the runway as they introduced sustainable fashion and design through clothing, accessories and makeup.

The sustainable pieces were contributed to the show by different companies, including vintage stores such as Material Planet and local store Andrew Davis Menswear. Two IU senior designers also contributed pieces.

Student designers Raquel Delgado and Sylvia Schieber not only had their pieces worn along the runway but worked backstage prepping their models for their REstyled debut.

Delgado incorporated her past studies of environmental conservation and preservation with her passion for fashion design and aspires to one day become a designer at an organic and sustainable clothing company, she said.

“With this fashion show, a lot of people are going to be exposed to sustainable design that they probably haven’t seen before,” Delgado said. “It’s really important that people see different types of sustainable design so that people can make sustainable design.
“I would like to show people that sustainable design isn’t just the hippy, bohemian chic clothing. It’s fashionable. It can be a type of clothing that can be fun, classy and flirty.”

Both designers have used various creative tactics to ensure their clothing has the ability to be both fashionable and sustainable. Schieber made her clothing out of natural-based fibers that she hand-dyed herself.

For Delgado and Schieber’s senior projects, the two had to incorporate a piece that was constructed entirely of recycled materials. Delgado’s creation is made of belts and old place napkins.

The Teens Turning Green and REstyled fashion show was brought to IU by IUSA Director of Sustainability Ellen Spurgeon.

Not only has Spurgeon brought together local Bloomington companies and student designers, but she has assembled a team of photographers, videographers, student stylists, dressers, events promoters and caterers to ensure the event accomplished its goal.

“I also want to the REstyled show to communicate that ethical fashion is just as fun and fashionable as other designs.
