IU junior Alicia Nieves, a junior studying political science as well as human migration studies through the Individualized Major Program, has been named this year’s Truman Scholar.
Nieves is a Wells Scholar and also the 18th student from IU to be named a Truman Scholar, according to the press release.
Nieves discovered she had been selected as a Truman Scholar during a meeting at Bryan Hall with IU President Michael McRobbie personally in attendance.
“Alicia combines a passionate commitment to social justice and community engagement with a dedication to scholarship at the highest level,” McRobbie said in the press release.“She challenges all those around her to find ways to make the world a better place.”
Nieves is a native of northwest Indiana and joins 53 other Truman Scholars named from 48 states.
“It’s such an honor,” Nieves said in the press release. “It is also a tremendous opportunity. I look forward to meeting with other Truman Scholars and working to provide better answers to the problems we see in America today.”
