A Bloomington High School North student is facing a felony charge after police found a rifle in a car parked in the school’s parking lot.
School staff overheard some students talking about a student possibly having a gun on school property early Tuesday, Sgt. Steve Kellams of the Bloomington Police Department said.
Administrators pulled the student from class, went with him to his car and were able to see the .22 caliber rifle in the backseat.
The student, 17, told police he had been target shooting the day before, Kellams said. The student reportedly said he stayed with a friend that night and forgot the gun was in his car when he went to school Tuesday morning.
The student was released to his parents and referred to the Monroe County Juvenile Probation Department. Possession of a firearm on school property is a Class D felony.
Bloomington High School North administrators declined to comment on any punishment the student may have received.
