So, the Opinion Desk is, arguably, the most controversial or talked-about section in the IDS, thus putting pressure on the two new guys on staff.
We’ve decided that in respect to New Year’s resolutions and everything that they entail, we’d like to set a few goals for ourselves and for the desk. Here’s to hoping you’ll get to know us a little. And if you’re looking to apply, you’ll know what we’re looking for.
First day on the job, we’re realizing there is a surplus of things you can do wrong. Who knew?
That said, we will learn from mistakes the whole semester, especially these first few weeks. If you stumble upon our errors or ways in which we’ve misspoken, we’re here to fix it, pronto.
We will hire writers with a diverse range of opinions who can contribute a meaningful argument to this section and spark disagreement within the staff.
Weekly writer meetings almost always get heated. This means we’re hiring people who are passionate about their subject matter and are ready to fight for it.
We crave that fight. Our job isn’t necessarily to be contrary, but if we always agree with the majority opinion, we’re not doing our job. We’re here to provoke you, but productively.
We will produce content we respect, even if we disagree with it. Staff editorials represent the beliefs of all the staff.
We won’t bore you. In past semesters, a handful of talented illustrators fell into our lap, which means our pictures accompanying the page will continue to wow you.
What’s more is that both of our new editors love to illustrate, as well, and we’re looking forward to drawing whenever we can.
If you like to write and you have opinions, we encourage you to apply to Opinion. If these resolutions are something you can comply with, we look forward to hearing from you.
