A Bloomington police officer dislocated his knee and another received injuries to his face, hand and ankle late Saturday while attempting to arrest a man for trespassing.
Apartment residents in the 400 block of East Wylie Street called police at about 11:55 a.m., reporting a man was knocking on their door, Bloomington Police Sgt. Shane Rasche said. The residents told police they did not know the man.
Officers Matt Gilmore and Jeff Rees responded to the call and found David Rose, 23, still knocking on the door, Rasche said. Approaching Rose, the officers asked him where he was trying to go.
“Here,” he said.
The officers told him the residents said they do not know who he is, but Rose disagreed, Rasche said. They asked him if he knew who lived in the apartment.
“Hoosiers,” he replied.
The officers told Rose he was likely at the wrong residence and asked for identification. Instead, Rose allegedly ran away. The officers yelled at him, telling him to stop, but he reportedly would not listen.
Gilmore and Rees chased Rose to the backyard area behind the apartment, where he allegedly still refused to obey the officers’ command. The officers caught up to the suspect and attempted to take him into custody.
During the struggle, Rose allegedly attempted to punch the officers, Rasche said. When the officers got him on the ground, he reportedly refused to put his hands behind his back and attempted to push himself back up off the ground.
The officers finally arrested Rose, but not before Gilmore dislocated his knee.
Rees was punched in the face, injuring his right eye.
He also hurt his right foot and left wrist, Rasche said.
Gilmore was transported to IU-Health Bloomington Hospital by ambulance. Fellow officers transported Rees to the hospital by car.
Both officers were treated for their injuries and released.
Rose is facing preliminary charges of trespass and resisting law enforcement.
