Student arrested for battery

During the IU football tailgate Saturday morning, a student was arrested for battery.

Benjamin Torchman, 22, was arrested after he fought with a 21-year-old male victim. The fight broke out when the victim confronted Torchman while Torchman was attempting to take liquor from the victim’s truck, IU Police Chief Keith Cash said.

“Torchman then struck the victim in the mouth, knocking some of his teeth out,” Cash said. “The battery occurred at 10:20 a.m. in the tailgate field close to 17th Street.”

Immediately after the incident, ESG security workers escorted Torchman to IUPD officers.

“There is no indication the two knew each other prior to the incident,” Cash said. “Torchman was arrested for battery with serious bodily injury and public intoxication.”
