Eigenmann stove fire causes minor water, smoke damage Thurs.

A fire broke out in Eigenmann Hall on Thursday.

The fire occurred at 4:53 p.m. in room 004A. This room is used by the Outdoor Adventure Living Learning Center, IU Police Department Chief Keith Cash said in an email.

Outdoor Adventures is a recreation program that serves IU students and the Bloomington Community, according to its website.

The room is a specially designed fire room that houses camping stoves after they are checked, Cash said.

A male worker who was attempting to start a propane stove in the room caused the fire.
“The stove then caught fire, and employees threw a fire blanket over the stove,” Cash said. “They then secured the room and notified the Eigenmann front desk.”

The fire sprinkler system activated in the room and in the Eigenmann dock, Cash said.
The fire caused smoke and water damage to the interior of the room, and some of the water from the sprinkler system made its way to the hallway tile floors.

The man who was in the room when the fire started received a minor burn to his hand, Cash said.

Cash said the residents of Eigenmann were briefly evacuated from the building, but no residents were displaced by the accident.
