The drumline of IU’s Marching Hundred may not come with the glitz and glamour that Nick Cannon’s film “Drumline” portrayed, but the experience has been worthwhile for the participating members.
IU’s award-winning marching band program is not all fun and games, though.
With two-hour practices three to five times a week, the IU Drumline is no minor commitment, senior Joe Keilman said.
“It can be busy and frustrating, but it’s fun,” he said.
Senior Hannah Dettmer is currently enjoying her fourth year on the drumline with the Marching Hundred.
“It’s fantastic, probably the best thing I’ve done here,” Dettmer said.
As one of three females on the drumline, Dettmer said she isn’t bothered by it.
“I like it,” she said. “I fit well.”
Senior Steve Colvill has played with the line for four years and is currently participating in his first year as section leader of the snares.
“It’s been great and it’s been a lot of fun, from when we started practicing and getting all the new people involved and up to speed to all of our performances,” he said.
In addition to performing at the home football games, the drumline plays around campus each Friday before a home football game.
“It’s been a lot of fun to get around and see some of the students out while we were performing,” Colvill said.
Along with other local sporting events, the IU Drumline has ventured into the professional sports arena by performing at an Indianapolis Colts game.
