Board of Trustees discuss IUPD campus operations

The IU Board of Trustees convened Thursday and Friday in Henke Hall in the North End Zone of Memorial Stadium.

Trustees discussed expanding the jurisdiction of the IU Police Department. Trustee William Cast said if campus forces leave their posts to assist other police efforts, the campus will remain secure.

“The general thought was that it’s a cooperative effort between law enforcement agencies that they needed the trustees’ approval for,” he said. “We gave it because their assurance is that it would not diminish their effort in their own jurisdiction.”

There is an ongoing discussion about the possible integration of the School of Journalism with the Department of Telecommunications and the Department of Communications and Culture from the College of Arts and Sciences in Bloomington.

This idea is part of the New Academic Direction Report released in May, said Mark Land, associate vice president for University Communications, in an email.

At this point, the idea is being explored, and there is no timeline for a decision, Trustees Cast and Patrick Shoulders confirmed.

The board will meet again Dec. 8 and 9 at IU-Southeast New Albany.
