Kilroy’s Sports Bar cited in Spierer case

Kilroy’s Sports Bar was cited on two alcohol related charges in relation to missing IU student Lauren Spierer by the Indiana State Excise Police Thursday.

Sports is cited for allowing a minor to loiter and furnishing alcoholic beverages to a minor, according to an Excise press release.

Excise issued the violation due to discrepancies between Spierer, 20, and the physical description on the identification she used to get into the bar, according to the release.

A report will be sent to the Alcohol & Tobacco Commission for review, and Sports could be facing a monetary fine and suspension or revocation of its permit to sell alcoholic beverages.

According to the release, the bar’s owners and employees cooperated with officers and provided requested information and videos.

Cpl. Travis Thickstun previously confirmed in June that there was an investigation into Sports.

Excise officers are present in Bloomington bars at least once or twice a week, Thickstun said. Officers were not at Sports the evening before Lauren’s disappearance, but they have made citations at the bar before in 2006, 2007 and 2008.

Spierer was last seen on June 3. She was at Sports that night with a friend until about 2:30 a.m., according to video surveillance.  After going to a friend’s apartment, she left at about 4:30 a.m. She was last seen at walking south on College Avenue from 11th Street, toward her apartment in Smallwood Plaza.

Video footage does not show her entering her apartment.
