Storm downs trees, power lines across city

A powerful thunderstorm hit Bloomington at approximately 5:30 p.m. today, downing trees and power lines across campus.

Currently 10th Street is blocked from Walnut Grove to Fee Lane due to a fallen tree. There is also a tree blocking the sidewalk and part of the street next to the Wells Library on Jordan Avenue. A large tree is blocking Seventh Street between Indiana and Dunn avenues and knocked down a streetlight. A large tree has also fallen and blocked Walnut Street between 11th and 12th streets.

There is also a tree that has hit a house on the northeast corner of the intersection of Grant and Third streets.

Many stoplights are currently not working, including the stoplights at the intersection of Atwater and Jordan avenues, the intersection of 3rd Street and College Mall Road and the intersection of Atwater and Woodlawn avenues.

Several large branches have fallen into the Jordan River and have slowed waterflow near the Indiana Memorial Union and Dunn Meadow.

There are also trees down in Dunn Cemetery, in front of the ROTC building on Third Street and a large tree limb has fallen on Seventh Street outside of Ernie Pyle Hall.

Duke Energy is reporting more than 10,000 power outages in Monroe County. Customers can call l 1-800-343-3525 to report outages and get an estimated time of restoration.

The National Weather Service warned prior to the storm hitting Bloomington that it had the potential to produce winds of up to 70 miles per hour.
